Mini company talk with Enterprise Ireland
On Wednesday the 20th of September, Serena from the County Enterprise Board came in and talked to us about our mini company. She asked us to think of creative ideas and many uses of a paper clip. Some of the ideas consisted of a tie pin and jewellery and chains. We were surprised how many ideas there were. She told us about the competition and the rules of it. She showed us the previous winners and their ideas.
She also gave us valuable advice about our mini company ideas!
Eagles Flight Workshop
On Friday the 22nd of September I attended an Eagles Flight Workshop which was held in the Pevilion. We were first split into groups of five and six people. I was in group 3, in the very middle of the room. The rules and regulations of the session were explained.
my initial understanding of the game was that whoever had the most gold won.
My group were the centre of trade, mainly because people were lazy and didn't want to walk all across the room. But my bartering and trading skills really came in handy!
Once it had ended and everyone depleted of supplies we anlyized our results. It was explained to us that it was not only about strategy but working together as a whole group and not separate teams.
I really enjoyed the Eagles Flight Workshop and would do something like it again!!!

'IT is not only for geeks' Talk
On Friday the 29th of September two members from Dell came into the school and talked to us about how 'IT is not only for geeks!'
Before the talk I didn't consider IT to only be for geeks. I love IT and solving computer problems and programming robots but I wouldn't consider myself as a 'geek'.
The speakers explained how the future will be totally revolved around technology. They described the importance of having IT skills in later life.
I greatly appreciated the advice that was given to us and would love to learn more about the topic.

Well-Being Week Talks
On the 6th of November well-being week began. We had a number of speakers come in and talk to us on the 6th and 7th, including Simon Harris, Ailson Canavan and a nutritional therapist.
Simon Harris
Simon Harris began the plethora of talks by discussing mental health to the senior school. He told us about the sugar taxes that are being implanted in April due to obesity in Ireland. Mr. Harris described in detail how the food pyramid will change dramatically. I enjoyed the Minister for Health's talk and agree with the changes he is making.
After our informative talk from Mr. Harris came another from Ms. Ailson Canavan. Ailson's talk was about her live in early adolescent years. She told us how she suffered greatly from depression and had extreme anxiety and thus turned to alcohol and became addicted. She discovered meditation and found what really made her happy. She told us that she writes three things down, every day, about what she is greatful for.
I found Ailson's talk inspirational
On Tuesday a nutritional therapist came in to discuss what foods are best on a regular basis. She started the talk by telling us that we are what we digest, not what we eat! I was baffled because I didn't understand what she meant until she explained that our 'feel-good' hormone is 90% stored in our gut. I didn't really take much out of the talk when it finished because she mainly talked about Asian foods.

Aware Talk
On Thursday the 10th of November a member from Aware gave us a very interactive presentation on Health and Mental Health and how to identify and deal with the feelings of depression or anxiety. Aware is an organisation that helps young people suffering from depression and mental health issues. Steve discussed with us the symptoms of anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. Steve suggested that we write down three things that we are greatful for in a booklet that he gave us.
I found the talk educational, interactive and beneficial. It gave me a better knowledge of the stages of mental health illnesses.

John's story was very emotional and incredible. John defeated the odds of survival and concurred his addictions.
I really appreciated Tiglin coming in and sharing their experiences with the Transition Year students.
